Oil refining is still a key element of the global energy system. As of 2020, the total global refinery capacity for crude oil was some 101.2 million barrels per day with throughput worldwide almost 76 million barrels of oil per day. Although the Energy transition is currently driving fundamental industry changes, there is still a huge focus on optimisation and development of current assets. As well as refineries, there is over 4000 Km of pipeline in the UK, which require regular maintenance and opex development.

Industrial gases are specifically manufactured for use in a range of industries, although they play particularly important roles in petroleum refining, chemical processing and metal manufacturing. Industry performance is therefore dependent on activity in these industries. The principal gases provided are nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, argon, hydrogen, helium and acetylene, although many other gases and mixtures are also available in gas cylinders.
