Column Turnaround (Gothenburg Sweden)

Engenda’s mechanical offering extends beyond the typical piping & mechanical disciplines that most UK Mechanical Contractors offer with its specialist column turnaround services. We regularly undertake column turnaround services throughout the UK and Mainland Europe.

As the preferred column contractor for this refinery in Sweden, we successfully completed one of the sites largest events in 2019. The event peaked at 180 personnel within our site team and a total 70,000 man-hours in 2019 was expended accident free.

This outage was a major undertaking with the scope of works being focussed in two areas of the refinery and featuring a combined total of almost 200 columns and drums. Engenda’s scope included the spading and despading, requiring more than 4,000 spades in total, all of which were required to be turned to facilitate the main outage works. Upon completion and hand over of the plant, all were successfully 100% delivered leak free.

In addition to these facilitating works, Engenda also undertook all of the vessel entries and associated full inspections required to identify and report on any corrective actions. Unfortunately, some were found to have tray damage but Engenda were able to order replacement trays and these were manufactured and delivered on an emergency basis from our UK facility. We also installed new nozzles and Incolloy weld overlay repairs to two columns allowing these to be returned back to service with minimum disruption. A complete Vacuum Column revamp was also part of our scope along with 13 other complete column re-trays.

Prior to the event in 2019, we completed a similar project for the same site in 2013 totalling 58,000 man hours.
