Client: Speciality Chemical Manufacturer Location: Warrington, UK Duration: 2025 Contract Type: Design & Build NEC4 Target cost framework
Engenda was awarded a Design & Build NEC4 Target Cost framework contract for the Steam Supply Upgrade project, acting as both Principal Designer and Principal Contractor. The project included the fully integrated design, fabrication and installation of new high-pressure steam infrastructure.
The Steam Supply Upgrade project involved installing new high-pressure boilers to replace ageing units and meet the site’s total steam demand. The boilers utilise recovered condensate from the monomer and polymer plants, with demineralised water from the existing DMW plant used as make-up water. The AO plant shutdown required steam and condensate systems to be rerouted, increasing project complexity.
The project deployed extensive equipment and logistics to support complex site works, including;
Multiple welding rigs for extensive structures and pipework
17m boom telehandlers and contract lifts
Transport of large off-site fabricated vessels
Welfare and site facilities for a rotating dual-shift workforce
Additionally, three off-site fabrication facilities delivered modular units to meet quality and schedule demands.
Key Challenges
Off-Site Fabrication & Quality Assurance To manage quality across three independent fabrication facilities within tight shutdown deadlines, Engenda applied rigorous QA protocols and oversight aligned with client schedules and independent audits. This ensured all components met specifications and were delivered on time.
Congested Site and Limited Working Space To overcome site space constraints and logistical bottlenecks, Engenda delivered off-site fabricated modular units and implemented dual shifts with dedicated safety oversight. This maximised productivity while maintaining safety standards and reducing assembly time.
Subcontractor Delivery Risks Mitigated When client-arranged subcontractors missed critical deadlines, Engenda mobilised additional in-house resources to cover shortfalls, protecting project milestones and maintaining quality without delay.
Final Delivery
Engenda delivered a full EPC wrap within 12 months from contract award to pre-commissioning under an aggressive schedule. The project ensured uninterrupted steam supply to the site and positioned the client for sustained operational performance.
